From a long list of 18 games, less than half now in its final stage. The list includes several blockbuster sequels, like Mass Effect 3, Bioware, and titles idependently developed as Proteus and Johann Sebastian Joust.

Other games to count the list Nintendo Super Mario 3D Land, Journey, in which the player takes the role of a figure dressed in a vast desert, Fez, a game Polytron, who has spent five years in the making, and game catherine psychological terror.

GameCity is a festival in Nottingham, which celebrates the culture of video games and is more than Booker Prize for the gaming industry. The award is presented annually by the back for the second time, following the detection of a success in its debut.

 The winner will be decided by a jury of "non-player" judges including radio and television presenter Jo Whiley and Louise Brealey, who appeared in the BBC drama Sherlock.

The panel's decision on October 24 will be announced.
